Frequently asked questions

Are spaces counted as characters?

Both are shown: “Characters” includes spaces and line breaks, “Characters (no spaces)” leaves them out. Emoji and accented letters count as one character each, just as you see them.

How is the reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes about 200 words per minute, a typical silent reading speed. Speaking time assumes about 130 words per minute, a comfortable pace for presentations and voice-overs.

How are SMS parts counted?

A standard SMS holds 160 characters in the GSM alphabet. As soon as the text contains a character outside it, for example emoji or Turkish letters like ç, ğ, ı and ş, the message is sent as Unicode and a part holds only 70 characters. Longer messages are split into parts of 153 (GSM) or 67 (Unicode) characters.

What are the SEO title and meta description limits?

Search engines usually show about 60 characters of a page title and about 160 characters of a meta description. Staying within these limits keeps your snippet from being cut off. Need to fix capitalization? Try the Case Converter.

Is my text saved or uploaded?

No. Counting happens in your browser. Your last text may be kept in this browser tab’s session storage so it survives a page reload; it is deleted when you close the tab.
