How to use Word Finder

  1. Type the letters on your rack (e.g. RETAINS). Add a * for each blank tile.
  2. Optionally enter letters already on the board: the word should start with, contain or end with them.
  3. Results are grouped by word length. Narrow them by choosing a length or sort them by score.

Frequently asked questions

Which word list does the finder use?

The English list is ENABLE, a public-domain word list of about 170,000 words that is widely used by word games such as Words with Friends. It includes plurals and verb forms but no proper nouns or abbreviations. Official Scrabble dictionaries (NWL, Collins) differ slightly, so a few words may not be accepted in every game.

How do blank tiles work?

Type a * (or ?) for each blank. The finder fills it with any letter. Letters filled by a blank are shown in red and score 0 points, just like in the game.

How do I use letters on the board?

Enter them in “Starts with”, “Contains” or “Ends with”. They are not taken from your rack and are shown in green. For example, to play through an E on the board, type E in “Contains”.

I know some letters of a crossword answer. How do I search?

Type the known letters in “Pattern” and a ? for each unknown one. For a 5-letter word with C first and O third, type “c?o??”. Leave your letters empty to list every word that fits.

How are scores calculated?

With the standard English Scrabble tile values (A, E, I 1 point; Q and Z 10). Premium squares and bingo bonuses are not included, so treat the score as a guide.

Is this cheating?

In a friendly game, agree on the rules first. The finder is great for practice, for checking after a game which words you missed and for solving word puzzles. Your letters never leave your browser.
