Remove accents

Paste text with accented letters and get plain Latin letters back: “Crème brûlée” becomes “Creme brulee”. Handy for usernames, file names, spreadsheets, old systems that break on special characters, and clean web addresses.

Frequently asked questions

Which letters are converted?

All Latin letters with accents and marks, such as é, è, ê, ñ, ç, å, ü and ő, plus special letters like ß (ss), æ (ae), œ (oe), ø (o) and ł (l). Other scripts like Greek or Cyrillic are left as they are.

What is the difference between “Remove accents” and “German style”?

Remove accents simply drops the mark, so “Müller” becomes “Muller”. German style follows the official German spelling without umlauts, so “Müller” becomes “Mueller” and “Straße” becomes “Strasse”. Use German style for German names on forms, tickets and passports.

What is a URL slug?

The readable part of a web address, such as /creme-brulee-recipe. The slug mode removes accents, makes everything lowercase and replaces spaces and punctuation with hyphens. Each line becomes its own slug.

Can the tool add accents back?

No. Restoring accents needs a dictionary of every word, because many words exist with and without them. For Turkish text there is a separate tool on the Turkish version of this site.
