Slug generator

A slug is the readable part of a web address, such as /best-coffee-in-istanbul. Paste a title and get a clean slug: special letters are converted properly (ğ → g, ı → i, ş → s, é → e, ß → ss, even Cyrillic and Greek), spaces and punctuation become separators, and you can shorten it or drop filler words. Paste a list to convert many titles at once.

Frequently asked questions

Why convert Turkish and accented letters?

Letters such as ğ, ş, ı or é are allowed in modern web addresses, but they are percent-encoded when a link is shared (ğ becomes %C4%9F), which looks broken and is easy to mistype. Plain letters are safer for links, file names and content management systems.

Hyphen or underscore?

Use hyphens. Google treats a hyphen as a space between words, but an underscore joins them: “red-shoes” is read as two words, “red_shoes” as one. Underscores and dots are offered for file names and code.

How long should a slug be?

Short and descriptive: 3–6 words, or under about 60 characters, is a good rule. When you set a maximum length, the slug is cut at a word boundary, so no word is left half-finished.

What does removing stop words do?

It drops short filler words such as “the”, “and” and “of” to make the slug shorter. The list matches the language of this page. If a title is made only of such words, they are kept.

Which languages are supported?

Turkish, German (ä → ae and ß → ss on the German page), French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Polish, the Nordic languages, Vietnamese, Russian, Ukrainian and other Cyrillic alphabets, and Greek. To sort or remove duplicates from a list of titles first, use Sort Lines & Remove Duplicates.
