Random Team Generator

Who plays with whom in five-a-side, how should the class split up for group work? Type the names, choose the number of groups and press "Make random groups". Teams come out fair, differing by at most one person, and you can switch to wheel mode to pick people one at a time.

Shortcut: Space or Ctrl+Enter spins.

The winner is picked by your browser's secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues); the spin is just an animation. Names never leave your device, and we can't see or influence the result.

    Entries

Press Enter for a new line. Paste several lines and each becomes its own entry (up to 200). To weight an entry, add *number after it: "Alice*3" makes Alice's slice, and chance, three times bigger.

How to use Random Team Generator

      1. Type names into the list or paste a list (one person per line).
      2. Choose the number of groups and press "Make random groups".
      3. Send the result to your group chat with "Copy groups"; if anyone complains, shuffle again in front of everyone.

      Frequently asked questions

      How are the groups made?

The names are shuffled with your browser's secure random number generator (Fisher–Yates) and then dealt out to the groups in turn. That's why group sizes differ by at most one, and every possible split is equally likely.

Can I keep the captains apart?

Yes: first split just the captains into the groups, then delete them from the list and split everyone else. Or switch to wheel mode and let each captain draw players in turn.

How many people and groups can I use?

Up to 200 names and 50 groups. You can't have more groups than names. Weights such as "*3" are ignored when splitting into groups.

Is it rigged? Is the result really random?

No, it isn't rigged. Before the wheel starts turning, the winner is chosen with your browser's cryptographically secure random number generator (crypto.getRandomValues); the wheel then simply animates towards that result. Without weights every entry has exactly the same chance, and neither we nor anyone else can decide the outcome in advance. It all runs in your browser and nothing is sent to a server. One honest caveat: whoever runs the page can edit the list or keep spinning until they like the result, so for public giveaways the most trustworthy approach is to share the list beforehand and livestream or screen-record the spin.
